John 9:13-23 Act 9: Scene 2

Act 9: Scene 2
John 9, Verses 13-23

They brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind. Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Remember the Pharisees? They are prime specialists of antagonism with the result lead astray effectiveness. The timing is perfect for their best day of antagonism: it was the Sabbath. Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. When you get an answer that you did not want or did not expect, you ask again. And he said to them, "He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see." A simple answer to a simple, yet complex question. Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, "This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath." The Pharisee's reasoning was limited, for they were stuck on the issue of the Sabbath. They rose this issue, according to John's Gospel, back in Chapter 5 when Jesus directed the lame man to pick up his bed and walk (on the Sabbath). There a man of some 38 years was walking. Now a blind man was seeing. They failed to see beyond their religion to see the miracle of life change. They were ... but now they ...! Jesus clearly broke the Sabbath, but He fulfilled the goodness and compassion of His Father, Almighty God, YHWH. But others were saying, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" And there was a division among them. This issue of the Law of God or the Compassion of God causes division to this day. So they said to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?" They asked the man again. His answer is of a deeper nature. It ventures from the previous 'what He did' into the 'who He is.' One's being always further explains issues previous decided and limited to one's actions. And he said, "He is a prophet." His answer was clearly more definitive. It was widely accepted in Judaism that if an indisputable miracle it was "prima facie evidence" that divine commission was involved. Therefore, the divine commission would place Him above any human legal authority. Jesus was a prophet. The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they call the parents of the very one who had received his sight, So they chose to discount the miracle by discounting the man. Thereby discounting the miracle. They called his parents. and questioned them saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?" The interrogation of the parents. If they could prove that the blindness was not from birth, then they could dismiss the validity of the miracle. So, what do you say, Dad? What do you say, Mom? Was he born blind? His parents answered them and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself." His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue. For this reason his parents said, "He is of age, ask him." They corroborated two facts: 1. This is our son, 2. He was born blind. They did not know 'how' and they refused to venture a guess. They were afraid, but they, nevertheless, did the right thing. They insisted that their son speak for himself for he was of age.

CONCLUSION
What is the difference between 'religion' and 'Christianity?' Which one is characterized by rules and regulations? Which one is characterized by a relationship?

Can you see beyond the Law of God to the Compassion of God?

Who do you say Jesus is?

John 9:1-12 Act 9: Scene 1 (Trust and Obey)

Overlook of John Chapters 9 and 10
This passage of John's account of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ covers the so-called 9th and 10th chapters. Chapters 9 and 10 which we will call Act 9 is divided up into 7 scenes. Scene 1 goes from verse 1 to verse 12.
Scene 2: verses 13-23
Scene 3: verses 24-34
Scene 4: verses 35-41
Scene 5: Chapter 10, Verses 1-6
Scene 6: verses 7-18
Scene 7: verses 19-21
We will address each scene with subsequent blog posts.

Act 9: Scene 1 (John 9:1-12)

And as He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?" Ever been part of a group that is playing follow the leader? Now, mix that physical attention with a leader that is sharing imperative information. You and the group are hanging on every word, you focus on him only distracted by a quick glance down to assure your footing. Then, he quickly turns his head. The group then looks to whatever direction he is looking. Ah, the power of a leader. This is the scenario of our passage in John. Jesus is walking. The disciples are following. Jesus sees. The disciples then see. The disciples ask a question. Notice how the 'man blind from birth' did not say anything. No plea. No moaning. No groaning. No belligerence. No irreverence. No victimization. No requests. No verbalization of any kind. Jesus saw him. From this point follow the verb 'see'. The Greek word is εἶδεν originally from οἶδα meaning to perceive, consider, be aware, behold. This word also translates 'to know' in the New Testament. It is compared with the Greek words ὀπτάνομαι (to literally see or appear) and ὁράω (to see, perceive, attend to). Jesus saw the blind man before the blind man knew Jesus was near. The man had Jesus' attention before Jesus had the blind man's attention. Jesus approached the man. Now, the Question. The question of the age. Whose fault was it? Who sinned? The man or his parents? Up until this time some taught that bad things happened to good 'innocent' people. This perspective, which is known in the Old Testament, is about to be turned upside down. For Jesus answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was in order that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of Him who sent Me, as long as it is day; night is coming, when no man can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." Here we have option number 3 to the blind man's situation. Number 1 is that his parents sinned and he is reaping the physical results. This happens every day. For we are descendants of Adam. Number 2 is that the man himself sinned. It is true that you will reap what you sow. But, now, with the emphasis of Jesus' declaration is Number 3: 'in order that the works of God might be displayed in him.' The purpose of God's works displayed is more supremely important than any miraculous antidote. He is the 'light of the world.' But in this declaration Jesus does not use the ἐγὼ εἰμι phrase which brought Him into the sights of the Jewish religious elite. Jesus already spoke of His deity (ἐγὼ εἰμι) as it relates to the 'Light of the World' in John 8:12. He does not use When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent). Notice that Jesus did and He spoke. The blind man made not request or gesture of need. And so he went away and washed, and came back seeing. I want you to understand that the benevolent action on Jesus part was not a result of the man's persistence or innovation. But, the man, when acted upon and spoken to, obeyed. He heard, went, obeyed and 'came back' with his sight. Gratitude will always carry the day. The man came back out of gratitude. Jesus bestowed on him and met a need that he was not even looking to have met and he was thankful.
  • 1 Chronicles 16:8 Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.
  • Psalms 100: 4-5 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
  • Revelation 11: 16-17 And the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, “We give You thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign.
The neighbors therefore, and those who previously saw him a beggar, were saying, "Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?" Don't you just love neighbors? If you can trust them for one thing, it is this. They will be forever equipped of 'would-a's', 'should-a's' and 'could-a's.' They give all pretense of knowing your past. But, do they know you as Jesus does? They knew him as a 'beggar', one who 'asks repeatedly, ask for an addition, ask earnestly or begs.' Others were saying, "This is he, still others were saying, "No, but he is like him." Not all were convinced this was the man. He kept saying "I am the one." If Jesus has done a work in you, you will have those that don't understand and even say that you are not the man they knew. For those of us who are in the beloved, given a new name, transferred out of the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of His Dear Son, we are surely not who we were before. Interesting note here. The man who can now see resorts to the ἐγὼ εἰμι (I AM) declaration to accentuate his being. Therefore they were saying to him, "How then were your eyes opened?" Okay, now that we've determined that you are who you say you are, how did this happen? He answered, "The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to Siloam, and wash'; so I went away and washed, and I received sight." Very simple accurate account of his encounter with Jesus. Can we simply articulate our encounter(s) with Jesus? And they said to him, "Where is He?" Notice how they did not ask the 'who' questions as they did the healed man. They had heard of Jesus. They, quite simply, wanted to know where He was. Do you know Him well enough to inquire of His location? He said, "I do not know." He was blind then, but now he sees.

APPLICATION
Bad things happen to people. Bad things happen to GOOD people. Bad things happen to BAD people. All of life reflects our propensity to be responsible. Therein is the Christian life. When we sin, and we will for Jesus never said we wouldn't, we have the privilege and the power and the provision to confess and repent. Confession and repentance does not insure the righting of all that went wrong as a result of your sin. But it does insure that you are right with God in an unadulterated relationship. That is taking responsibility for our wrong actions. Do it. Be clean. However, what happens when BAD things happen to you when you have not sinned? Be sure that you have no sin to confess or repent of. Then rest and be expectant of the works of God to be revealed in your life.

Confession
Confession means to say the same as. It sounds like, 'I sinned.' Or, "I was wrong." Or, "I lied." Confession does NOT sound like, 'It is wrong." Or, 'I am sorry.' Or, 'Lying is wrong.' Or, ' I am sorry you are so sensitive.'

Repentance
Repentance means to turn away or to change direction. Christianity is about a life change, a continual life change. You can never say 'Been there, done that' with Christianity. Religion is about getting a quick fix. Christianity is about life change. If you sin, then stop doing it.

Be very careful in trusting in God's forgiveness apart from your lifestyle of confession and repentance as the Holy Spirit points out your sin to you.

A Journey Down the Lane: Healing

On December 19, 1987, two young people, Dan Lane and Maria Wood became Mr. and Mrs. L. Dan Lane, Jr. when they came together out of differing backgrounds but with a common faith. As husband and wife, each brought to their union a deep desire to glorify God and to raise Godly children. This is His story, their story, a story of tears, fears, resolve, pain, questions, obedience and comfort. Until the end of time, God is Faithful and True.

Dan and Maria's story revolves around great pain, disappointment and healing. It is the story of their God and their children. The story is really a story based on their experiences with three passages of Scripture:
Psalm 22: 9-10 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother's breast. From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God.
Psalm 139: 13-18 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.
1 Thessalonians 5:15-22 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every from of evil.
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ. But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort.

From this point on, Dan and Maria will tell you their story in the first person. For their story, while being one, is a story intertwined with their individual stories.

Maria -
After we were married, I continued to work at an elementary school and really enjoyed it, but longed to have our own baby. In April and in August of 1989, we miscarried our first 2 children both ending around 10-12 weeks in the pregnancy. I was devastated. The physical pain of the miscarriages and the hospital procedures are painful memories for me.

Dan-

April of 1989 was full of grief for us. Maria's side of the family dealt with the death of Jackson Hinton Wood (Granddaddy) in North Carolina and two in utero children. Our child was miscarried a day before Maria's sister miscarried following both of our returns to Georgia from the North Carolina funeral. For the most part, we attributed both miscarriages to the unfortunate combination of stress, grief and excessive car travel.

In August 1989, we received news of my grandfather's death. Arman Watt Lane (aka Daddy Lane) died in his home following a long bout of diabetes and Alzheimers. His wife, Mrs. Bernice Derrick Lane (aka Mama Lane) cared for him in their home until his death. Maria and I believed that she should not make the trip to Charlotte, North Carolina due to the recent memory of this grandfather / child death combination in previous Spring. Therefore, I went to funeral and to be with Mama Lane while Maria remained in Tucker. Daddy Lane's funeral plans were set. Mama Lane grieved but had joy and peace flowing from her. Daddy Lane's illness was a burden she carried well until the end. Daddy Lane has six grandsons and each was honored when asked by Mama Lane to carry their grandfather's casket. On the morning of the burial, I received a phone call from Maria who was home in Georgia. She had begun spotting. Now 'spotting' is a trauma, on pins and needles, word for those carrying children. On that morning I was hit in the stomach with love, life and the possibility of death on two fronts. I hung up the phone to be met by my dad with, "What's wrong son?" I told him and he said, "Let's go talk to Mama Lane." Mama Lane listened to me with the eyes that only she had. She hugged me and while scratching my back, she said, "Dan, you need to go home to be with Maria." .............. Did you hear that? Mama Lane, who is preparing to bury her husband, Daddy Lane, said "Dan, you need to go home to be with Maria."............. What !?! and mess up the 'before time ordained six grandson bury the grandfather event?' She said, "Maria needs you and your Daddy Lane is dead. He won't mind." (Lane humor surfaces at unique times) Wow! What a selfless lady. Soon I was southbound on I-85 heading back to Georgia. I was actually on the road while the funeral was going on. I arrived home before Maria miscarried our second child.

What followed is what seemed like an eternity of grief, pain, questioning, bewilderment, resentment, mourning, loss and ............... I was dealing with the death of two grandfathers and the death of two children. My family tree was collapsing on me from both ends.
Years past before I visited Daddy Lane's burial site.

Maria-
It seemed like all my friends were pregnant or happy with their new babies. I know that was my delusion as I found comfort and understanding with my sister who had also miscarried the day after I did in April. After each loss we received consoling phone calls, some meals, and many cards from family and friends. The main verse shared was evident. Based on 2 Corinthians 1:4 I offer you comfort with the comfort I have received. I had not realized the amount of people in our lives that had experienced loss in pregnancy or from still birth. I remember thinking that I would hang on to those cards as proof of me carrying a baby and how I would have received cards of congratulations if either of those babies had lived.

I felt so empty. I loved being pregnant. I wanted those babies. I wanted to quit work and stay home with them.

I blamed Dan. I was hurt. Looking back I started pushing people away who wanted comfort and who tried to comfort me. People asked why it happened or offered their suggestions as to the causes. I tried to be kind and sweet but their words hurt deeply and only seemed to add to the pain.

I couldn't figure out why God wouldn't let me be what I felt He had so deeply etched in me to be. I didn't want a career. A Momma. He wouldn't let me be that. But, I was a Momma, but an empty armed one.

I was probably worse off than I let on. I say that because I remember while keeping the church nursery one night, I was holding a plastic baby doll for one of the toddlers. From deep within this huge wave of yearning emotion caused me to cradle the baby doll in my empty arms and wish like a small child, that the baby doll was real.

.......................... HEALING.............................

Maria-
As a result of a college class Dan was taking, we started a small support group for people who had or were going through what we were experiencing. Not many people attended. But, as a result of trying to have a support group, a question was asked of me. "Have you thanked God for the loss of your babies?" I didn't see that I was captive. Captive to fear, anger, hurt, and loss of all I wanted in my adult life. Having a full term pregnancy was a dream and my heart's desire. But that was not the answer to me being free and whole and healthy again.

I remember applying that scripture ("Give thanks in all things, for this is the will of God concerning you.") to our circumstance by struggling to give thanks for the death of our children. I came face to face with the fact that you cannot have faith in One that you do not trust and you cannot trust someone that you are not thankful to. Much freedom and release of burden came when I verbally thanked my Father for the lives and deaths of my children. I trusted Him with children that He loved more than me. I'm not sure where Dan and I picked up on particular saying, but it started to come to mind often. It is one that we have said many times recently to each other over the last 18 months following a different loss. It's this: "Do you trust God or just say you trust God?"

Dan-
During the time of healing I was asked to play the part of Joseph in our church's yearly Nativity play (1989). I wrestled greatly with the fact of playing the part of a father but foun
d great comfort in playing Joseph who was not yet a biological father and never would be that to Jesus. Jesus greatly impacted both Joseph and Mary from the womb. So did our children. Our children while in utero have greatly impacted our lives.

Maria-
One Sunday afternoon in March of 1990, I was a part of a prayer time at our church. During that meeting I knew I had to thank God for the loss of our babies. I proclaimed this out loud in a prayer as I felt that it had to be confessed with my mouth, in faith to other believers. I was sobbing through it all but that was the sound of freedom, the chains were falling off. I had peace once again. Of course I still wanted children but I was different. I was free.

God's timing is so sweet. At that meeting, I was already pregnant with Danny but didn't know it yet. I am glad I didn't know. I didn't have hope of a baby that led me to that prayer, it was hope in my Lord. My Jehovah Jireh.

With Danny, I knew I could loose this baby too. But, I had peace that even if I lost again, I knew what to do. Be thankful and walk through the pain and hurt.

My due date was January 1, 1991. Sometime during the pregnancy I thought I heard God say the baby would be born on December 21. I didn't tell Dan cause I thought I told myself that.... until the day that Dan shared with me that God told him the baby would be born on December 21.

Dan and Maria-
"God gave you a rose." Those were the words of our pastor ,Steve Hammack , at the time of Danny's birth. On December 21, I went to see Dr. Sotomayor while Dan went to work. I (Dan) remember the trip to work talking with God about this day. I felt that today would be the day but His sovereignty and worthiness would not diminish if Danny was not born "today."Although I (Maria) was not in active labor yet, I was dilated to 6 cm. We were off to Northside Hospital after we stopped to get a milkshake. After much back labor and no pain meds, Danny was born at 11:57 PM on December 21. God gave us a rose to show us that we had not slipped from His hand and had not for a moment disappeared from His sight. His gaze and kind thoughts were sustaining us this whole time. He gave us a brightly colored rose in the midst of a dingy black, white and gray 3 years.

Brittany was born at 11:48 on August 13, 1992 two days before her due date.

In August, 1994 an ultrasound confirmed another loss. Unlike our first 2 miscarriages, I was not hemorrhaging. Through much counsel from Dan's Mom(who was a RN in "labor and delivery") and others, God led us and allowed to not go to the hospital. This was a sorrowful time as Danny was old enough to be excited about the baby. My parents were their for us as usual and I had a month of rest and healing with them at the beach.

Dan and Maria-
The next month we were expecting again and were able to change doctors. This baby was expected to be born June 27, 1995. During our interview with a new doctor, Dr. Schermerhorn, the subject of my miscarriage at home was discussed. Dr. Schermerhorn said that was a good thing because I would not be able to carrying baby if I had the D&C procedure. It was a result of God's leading that kept this healthy baby in a healthy womb. McKinney Rose was born on June 29, 1995. The meaning of our children's names are important to us. McKinney's name came while we lived in Dallas, Texas. McKinney Avenue is downtown and McKinney, Texas is a quaint small town with many antiques stores. Therefore, McKinney's name means 'the result of God's leading.' If we had not listened to the still small voice in the middle of the miscarriage of our child, then we would not be holding McKinney Rose now.

Maria-
Our other precious children were born: Ansley Elizabeth on October 16, 1996 in Texas; Rockey Hinton on August 26, 1998 in Georgia and Shelby Dianne on September 10, 2002.

There are times that I look around the house and count all 8 of us because it seems like someone is missing. There are times when I get emotional about the three children I never held in my arms. I still feel the lump in my throat if I find myself revisiting the pain and loneliness I felt. I can say that even recently God has allowed me to be healed of other hurts surrounding our loss of children. Freedom is a gracious gift from my precious Heavenly Father. I can thank God for this path I walk. I trust Him with what is best for me. I want to be completely in His will, no matter what life brings. Perhaps I can comfort those who need comfort as God brings them into my life.

A sweet Texas friend, Valerie, asked me if she could ask me a question a day or two after miscarrying at home. I said 'sure.' She asked if we ever thought to name our babies. I began to weep. It gave me comfort to think of naming my children I did not know. I could give them only one thing. Why not give them all I could give them, a name. We named them Caleb Hinton Lane, Bethany Rose Lane and Danny named Jeremiah David Lane.

Dan-
Naming Caleb, Bethany and Jeremiah allows us to embrace them in a personal way. They are our children instead of medical terms. They are my heritage instead of an outcast.

John 4:43-54 Royal Official: Healing and Faith

According to John
Chapter 4

Verses 43-45

43 After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Verses 46-54
46 Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum . 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. 51 As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and his whole household. 54 This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

COMMENTARY
Verses 43-45
After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. Remember, Jesus took a detour from the normal Jewish route, to go through Samaria. The accepted clean "non-associative" route led travelers to traverse the Jordan River when traveling from (to) Judea in the south to ( from) Galilee in the north instead of going straight through Samaria. These two days refer to the time spent with the Samaritan woman and those of her Samaritan city. That part of the story is told in the paragraphs immediately before in According to John. For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. John, the Disciple, Apostle and writer of this account, gives us an interesting statement here. John remembers hearing Jesus saying this about Himself. It was more than a Jewish idiom. At its core we have the subject of "honor" introduced like a fly darting across your field of vision. "Honor" as translated in the New American Standard is τιμὴν (timen) in the Greek language. Even though it is not a major issue in this story, I would like to take this time to begin a cultivation of its meaning so we will have a foundation as we continue through John's account. From the root word, , meaning I. worship, esteem, honor, and in pl. honors, such as are accorded to gods or to superiors, or bestowed (whether by gods or men) as a reward for services, 2. honor, dignity, lordship, as the attribute of gods or kings, 3. a dignity, office, magistracy, and in pl., civic honors, 4. present of honor, compliment, offering, e.g. to the gods, II. of things, worth, value, price, 2. valuation, estimate, for purposes of assessment, III. compensation, satisfaction, penalty. The opposite of honor is shame. Honor is to speak well of or to attribute worth to or to place a great price on. Shame is to speak badly against or to attribute uselessness to or to devalue something or someone. Let me ask you a question. Does your speech, the words that come out of your mouth, sound like honor? Do you honor and build people up? Or, do you shame and tear people down? Now! I know I don't have to look far past my family relationship to see how I have to fight to keep honor in my speech. But, do you honor and build YHWH up in your life? Or, do you shame HIM? I think that John remembered Jesus' comment for this reason. We can sometimes allow familiarity to breed dishonor. Familiarity in any realm of life can provide us with the opportunity to abandon our awe which leads to dishonor. Keep that in mind as you study the whole of God's Word and see how His people frequently fail when familiarity attacks the freshness of their fellowship with YHWH. You must never say (for it is never true), "been there, done that" with YHWH. HE IS........... So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast. The Galileans, these are the ones that Jesus said that they did not honor him, yet they searched Him out because of what He did in Jerusalem. More than likely these Galileans took the trans-Jordan trek from Judea instead of following Jesus through Samaria. They were probably asking each other about Jesus, his doings and sayings, as they reached Galilee from their time in Jerusalem. Jesus was the buzz of their conversations and they were looking to be with Him. Yet, a prophet has no honor in his own country. Their receiving Him might have a superficial flavor to it.

Verses 46-54
Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. Jesus and his followers, our author included, return to the site of Jesus' first miracle. Remember, Jesus performed this miracle at a wedding and his miraculous deed was behind the scenes to save the face of the bridegroom. If anyone ever understands the role of the bridegroom in a wedding, it is Jesus Christ.
And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. It was approximately 25 miles from Cana to Capernaum. Remember that Cana is inland on a slope fit for vineyards. Capernaum was a coastal town on the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee. Regarding the royal official this is no ordinary government bureaucrat. The Greek word here, , tells us and the Greek reading audience that this man was royal, kingly, one who has proven himself truly kingly, and acted with kingly authority. He either belonged to a king, in this case Caesar, or he was the king's friend or officer. He was a little more that noble. John use this term to accentuate this man's tie to royalty so that we see that people from all walks of life came to Jesus for answers and healing. Remember, this falls on the chronological heals of Jesus speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well. The next chronological event, if I may presume, is Jesus speaking with a crippled man. Jesus was known for interacting with all walks of life. Jesus has not changed and He will not change. He can meet you at the point of your need no matter how abased or kingly.
When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. This royal man heard, went and implored. What an example of someone desperate to have an encounter with Jesus. The word translated heard is the Greek word ἀκούσας is a primary verb meaning to hear (in various senses) -- give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), (shall) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand (Strong's Concordance). Have you heard anything concerning Jesus? Then, the royal man went to Him. As a result of hearing about Jesus, the man went to Him. Have acted on your hearing of Jesus by going to Him? Then the royal man was imploring Him. The word translated implore is ἠρώτα from ἐρωτάω meaning to interrogate; by implication, to request -- ask, beseech, desire, entreat, pray. W.E. Vine (Expository Dictionary of N. T. Words, p. 79. Thank you Chris F. for the gift of this book years ago.) states that ἐρωτάω more frequently suggests that the petitioner is on a footing of equality or familiarity with the person whom he requests. It is used of a king in making request from another king.... In this respect it is significant that the Lord Jesus (always used ἐρωτάω) in the matter of making request to the (His) Father." The royal man, with the use of this petitioning word, states his appropriate high view of himself. The man respectfully asked and beseeched Jesus for his son was dying. Death was out of the control of this royal man who desperately dared to put himself on the same footing with Jesus. Are you desperate? If so, then respond to what you have heard, go to Jesus and petition him for life in the areas of death: light in the areas of darkness; peace in the areas of unrest; understanding in the areas of bewilderment; strength in the areas of weakness...
So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.” The word translated signs is the Greek word σημεῖα meaning a sign from the gods, omen, wonder, portent, as in LXX Exodus 4:8; Matthew 24:24; John 4:48, cf; especially of the constellations, regarded as signs. The Greek word for wonders is τέρατα sign, wonder, marvel, portent, a sign of coming battle; especially of signs in heaven; in concrete sense, monster; of a serpent, of the Sphinx; used by Cicero of Caesar, Att.8.9.4; monstrous birth, monstrosity. The word translated believe is πιστεύσητε in Greek. This word carries much to be investigated regarding its use and meaning, not only to Christian literature but to the whole of Greek literature as it reflects Greek culture. It carries the simply meanings of: trust, put faith in, rely on a person, thing, or statement. Also, certain nuances such as certainty and confidence highlight the central heart felt expression of this royal man. For he said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." A simple request in a time of great need. And Jesus said to him, "Go, your son lives." The word that all parents of dying children would love to hear. The Word in flesh, the great I AM, YHWH, the Lord Jesus Christ speaking to you saying, 'your child lives.' Note the reaction of the child's father. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. There is our believe word again. This time can you feel the confidence that the royal man had in a simple word from Jesus? No questions. No requests to have Jesus repeat what He said. He was sitting on all confidence that expressed his faith. Jesus said it, the man believed it and that settled it. Your son lives. WOW! What faith. What confidence. I only desire to live a life that expresses such simple confidence in Jesus. A faith that does not ask questions nor does it need to understand everything before I accept His Word.
As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and his whole household. Can you imagine the celebration of life? Do not confuse these slaves situation with their master, the royal man, and the slavery so cruelly forced upon Africans and children in our past and present. New Testament slavery is a subject for interesting study but not at this time. These slaves were trusted with the household while this royal man carried out his duties and visit to see Jesus. They were caring for the son while the father went to beg Jesus to heal his son. Be careful to note the spread of confidence in Jesus throughout this household which more than likely included the slaves. Does your household have a confidence in Jesus? No matter how high socially, politically, economically and scholastically you are, or think you are, there is much to be gained by confidently trusting in Jesus, even for the life of your child.

This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee. John's remark here brings us to reflect on Jesus' first miracle in Cana when he turned water into wine at the wedding feast. Both of these miracles were in the private realm with those immediately affected and the disciples. John primarily focuses on the private moments in the life of Jesus. He and his life account are different from the other three gospel writers, Matthew, Mark and Luke.

SUMMARY
This portion of chapter 4 is often overlooked. It stands in the middle of some of the great quoted passage from well known stories from the Bible. Yet, what an example of the authority of Jesus and the confident faith of the high ranking royal man. There is much to be applied from their brief encounter. Act on what you have heard about Jesus. Let those words draw you to him with the aches of your heart. Plead with Him for intervention into your life circumstance(s). Then, accept His word to you, which is a promise of His care for you. If you truly come to Him confidently and then go confidently, then your household will be full of confidence as they trust in Jesus. He is faithful to pull you out of the kingdom of darkness, lies, and death by transferring you into His Kingdom which is the kingdom of light, truth and life.
